This week we will be spotlighting one of our lessons from our fully resourced English planning based on 'Omar the Bees and Me' by Helen Mortimer.
This is actually the very first lesson in the three week unit and we want to get the children buzzing with excitement!
Activity 1
The very first thing the Year 2 children will see is a feely bag... inside the teacher will have hidden objects linked to the theme of the book: a jar of honey, a toy bee, a flower and a packet of seeds. A few children will be invited to pull out an object from the feely bag and the class must guess what the theme of their new class book is!
Activity 2
The class teacher will reveal the book, 'Omar, the Bees and Me' and begin to read the story to the children. Once the teacher has reached a certain point, they will ask the children if they know anything about bees. Some children may have a negative perception of bees if they have been previously stung.
The children will go on a bee hunt around the school! They will need to find the ten bee fact cards which their teacher has hidden prior to the lesson. Once the children have found a bee fact card, they need to write down the bee fact on their activity sheet.
Adaptation
For children who need further support, they will also travel around the school looking for the bee facts, but instead of writing them down, they need to circle the correct bee facts on their adapted activity sheet (where they have one correct fact and one incorrect fact for each bee).
When the children come back to the classroom with all their bee facts, they will discuss them as a class and see if they managed to find them all!
This lesson will have the children buzzing with excitement about their new book and bursting at the seams with bee facts!
