This week's Bookshelf Best is 'Turtle Moon' by Hannah Gold.
Having read all of Hannah Gold’s other books, I was delighted to find ‘Turtle Moon’ jostling for my attention on the laden library shelf. The protagonist of the story, Silver, suddenly finds her life changing rapidly as her artist father and vet mother shock her by announcing they are all leaving to live at a turtle sanctuary on the other side of the world. Although initially desperately lonely, Silver soon finds a friend and the pair quickly become devoted to looking after the beautiful turtles who grace the beaches of Costa Rica. Silver can’t believe her eyes when she witnesses the incredibly rare leatherback turtle delicately burying her precious eggs on the beach right in front of Silver. With a pointed look from the turtle mother (as she retreats into the sea) to Silver, the young girl knows it’s her duty to keep the eggs safe. But what happens when someone tries to steal the eggs? What lengths will Silver go to in order to track them down through the dangerous rainforest?
A great read for 8+ readers.
